Alpine Skiing, 2018 Winter Olympics. Women's Giant Slalom

downhill ski run

Alpine skiing is an athletic sport that involves speed and agility. It is practiced worldwide and includes six disciplines -- downhill, slalom, giant slalom, super-G, super combined, and team events. It was first introduced in the late 19th century, and it has been a popular Olympic sport since 1920.

Mikaela Schiffrin has won her third world championship in the women’s downhill. She is now the second most successful skier in history behind Austrian Annemarie Möser-Proell.

The race results today were not as expected. A number of new finalists, and many top competitors finished lower in the pack. Corinne Suter, a Swiss athlete who won a Silver in PyeongChang 2012, celebrated by winning her first Gold.

Flury’s victory was unexpected as she only had a single top-10 result in 10 races, both at the World Cup-level and Olympic level. Sofia Goggia of Italy, widely considered to be the favorite, was beaten by Flury.

She was in the lead at the beginning of her race, but it changed to second after her fourth run. She stayed there and didn't give up a second in the race.

Sofia Goggia from Austria lost her position after skidding through a barrier. Nina Ortlieb, the Swiss pre-race favorite, was disqualified. The rest of the field had a good run, and were able to win their first World Cup Downhill medals.

Brignone came in third place with a 2:21 time, only 0.12 second behind her teammate who was the World Cup champion defending. Ragnhild mowinckel from Norway, starting the day fifth, also had a fantastic race, earning a Bronze. Brignone moved into second place on the World Cup Standings in addition to earning the medals.

The race was shortened by the weather, with a second run called off due to snow. Lara Gut-Behrami had the fastest time after the initial run of 1:39.43.

Viktoria Rebensburg from Sweden placed sixth overall with a timing of 1:40.50. She finished just ahead of Sweden’s Ilka Stuhec and France’s Tessa Worley who both DNFed.
